The change you have meant to make for a year

Most senior people can name one: delegate more, speak up earlier, stop answering email at midnight. They are not short of willpower or advice. Something keeps pulling them back.

The map, based on the work of Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey, finds the hidden commitment that competes with your goal and the assumption behind it. Then it asks you to test that assumption, carefully and on a small scale. Allow 60 to 90 minutes for your first map.

What is in it

  • A short introduction. Where the method comes from, and what each of the 4 columns asks.
  • Template A, the map. Goal, behaviours, hidden commitments and big assumptions, with a worry box.
  • Template B, the test plan. Small, safe tests and what they show.
  • The user guide. 8 steps, from writing the goal to testing the assumption.

The map does not ask you to stop the behaviour. It asks you to test the belief behind it.

Who is it for

Three readers each at a point where priorities are shifting.

The senior leader

The feedback has said the same thing for 2 years. This is a way to find out why.

The newly promoted

The habits that earned the role are now in the way. The map shows what they protect.

The founder

You know you should let go of more. Something keeps you holding on.

Want to talk your map through?

Maps completed alone often stop at column 3, because that is where it starts to feel personal. A second person who asks good questions tends to make the rest clearer.
